SCHEDULED SWAB TESTING

As part of SPL’s quality assurance processes, scheduled testing is conducted to ensure the highest standards of hygiene are maintained.  Testing is conducted quarterly in accordance with SPL’s contractual obligations with RHC. 

Microbial swab testing is conducted through a third-party expert at the finishing stage of the laundry process.  Random linen samples are selected which cover SPL’s service offering and tested using the microbial swab method. 

Microbial swab testing in accordance with Australian Standard: AS5013.5, is a laboratory technique used to detect the presence of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites) on surfaces, objects, or living organisms. This method involves using a sterile swab to collect samples from the surface being tested, which are then transferred to a culture medium to identify specific microbes. 

1. Sampling: A sterile swab is rubbed across the surface or area to be tested.  The swab picks up microbial organisms from that area. 

1. Transporting the Sample: The swab is placed in a transport medium or directly into a testing system to preserve the microorganisms during transportation to the laboratory. 

1. Analysis and Reporting: Results from culturing or molecular tests are analyzed to identify the microbial species present. The findings are then reported, often along with susceptibility testing for antibiotics or other treatments. 

All products supplied by SPL must attain a testing result of <1 CFU/cm2 to be deemed compliant. 

Testing for all sites has been conducted by our 3rd party partners Ecolab since September.  No non-conformances have been identified through testing to date.
